50 Years Of Hard-work, Achievements & Catastrophe Shaping Tourism in Maldives

Thursday 30th of December 2021

Starting with the most basic facilities and amenities Maldives as a country had to offer in 1972, to achieving The World’s Leading Destination Awards twice in a row, the industry has seen their highest and experienced their lowest within the 50 years that it has been active.

Starting from just a couple of resorts, to now having over 150 resorts in operation and more than 400 guest houses ready to offer the local experiences to their visiting guests, the industry keeps blooming further with their latest innovation of Home Stay introduced to the country.

Maldives was barely known across the globe in the early days however, it has found its way to conquer the top traveling destinations list in many first world countries. From celebrities to world leaders, each individual seems to make their way to experience the paradise first hand with the natural luxury the country offers.

When the pandemic hit the world like a wave, Maldives experiences their worst numbers in the tourism industry, facing the lowest hit the country had experienced in the total of 50 years. However, despite the challenges, with hard-work and dedication, the industry partners along with the government has brought back the industry with extra ordinary number of tourist arrivals.

As we celebrate 50 years of the budding Tourism Industry, Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI) requests all the local communities across the country to come and join hands to celebrate together the half-a-century glorious achievement.

Here’s to 50 more years of celebrations in Tourism Industry of Maldives!
