At the Stelliers Awards 2020, Six Senses Maldives shines brightly for its sustainable initiatives, and this time, the credits are most deserved by the resort’s Education and Community Outreach Manager, Adam, who was named Sustainable Hotelier of the Year at the awards! There’s a big reason why he was awarded this prestigious title: the change.
In 2019, what was known as “The Hotelier Awards” became “Stelliers”, the Leading Hotelier Awards Platform, celebrating the stars in the industry. It is considered as the only accolade in Asia that honours the dedicated professionals of the hotel industry. The award is not only to recognize the most talented hoteliers, but also to inspire the younger generations to pursue a career in hospitality.
Adam leads the ‘Eku Eky’ (meaning ‘together’ in Dhivehi) initiative, which was launched to build stronger relationships between the resort and the local community. He also leads a school outreach program that aims to inspire the next generation of ocean stewards to be advocates for their own island’s natural resources. This program has managed to take 300 students to snorkeling sessions and ensured availability of locally relevant marine books for all schools through guest donations.
But that’s not all. The Sustainable Hotelier of 2020 is also driving force behind Plastic Free Laamu Atoll, a campaign with the aim of eliminating single use plastics within the community. Through this initiative, 63 water filters have been donated, providing clean, plastic free drinking water to approximately 4,384 people, and avoiding an estimated 1.6 million single-use plastic water bottles annually.
