EarthCheck – the leading environmental benchmarking programme in the global travel and tourism industry acknowledges Amilla Maldives Resort and Residences’ efforts in making the island sustainable.
Two years in the making, the resort has taken leading steps from collecting precious rainwater to energy reduction projects, now officially Silver Certified by EarthCheck.
The tireless efforts by the islanders of Amilla included producing and bottling desalinated, mineralized water on-site as well as using the island's plentiful space to grow as many vegetables, fruit and herbs as possible. The UN (UNdo the Harm in the World) waste processing facility is also a key initiative now running successfully, identifying much of the waste on the island for recycling through thoughtful sorting.
Speaking of recycling, Amilla also took key steps towards reducing the volume of waste on the island. This was achieved mostly by bulk purchasing items, as well as sourcing compostable products, such as vacuum pack bags and pot scrubbers.
A sustainable Amilla began as a challenge taken on by Amilla Maldives’ first ever Sustainability and Wellness Manager, Victoria Kruse in 2019. Under her guidance, the resort today has hugely popular ‘Wellness Your Way’ (WYW) menus, featuring fresh produce grown steps away from the restaurants, in Amilla’s new organic gardens.
“Sustainability and reducing the impact on our environment can only come from a whole team effort, and the Silver Certification we received today is an important external recognition of all the hard work that our whole team makes in these efforts," she said.
Soon to be launched, Amilla islanders are currently working on implementing an outdoor solar lighting project, making use of the ample sunshine in the sunny Maldives.
