The battle is the fight to drive the jihadists from Mosul after ISIS had taken control of the city in June 2014, causing a large portion of city’s population to flee. The conflict took nine months and cost the lives of 1,200 Iraqi soldiers, as well as thousands of civilians and ISIS fighters.
With around 32000 buildings estimated to be damaged, we cannot imagine the real level of destruction of the city. People are homeless and surrounded by bodies still buried in rubble. Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi declared victory over ISIS in Mosul in July 2017. It would take years to rebuild the place and the lives of the people.
