Can The Extension Of Tourist Visa Take Tourism In The Maldives To New Heights?

Tuesday 20th of April 2021

As per the Immigration Laws in force, tourists are granted a 30-day on-arrival visa without payments from the date of arrival. The power is vested within Controller of Immigration to extend this visa for a period of three-month subject to a payment of MVR 750.

Recently, the Minister of Tourism Dr. Abdulla Mausoom has expressed that tourism in the Maldives has the potential to reach even greater heights if the tourist visa period of three-months could be increased. Whilst the law would need to be amended to implement such a chance, the Minister notes that the Controller of Immigration will get to decide on the period of extension after three months.

Minister Mausoom further explains that in his personal opinion he would recommend extending the tourist visa for a total of 270 days in total which can be extended by 30 days per months following the first three months. However, during an extended stay on a tourist visa, a foreigner shall not be employed in the country.

Moreover, the extension of tourist visas will not change the 30-day on-arrival visa granted to tourists without the requirement of a fee payment in any way.
