As of 01:00pm, Health Protection Agency confirmed an additional 27 cases of COVID-19 infection in Maldives. The cases were of 18 Bangladeshis and 9 Maldivians. This totaled the number of confirmed cases to 862. There have been 29 recoveries and total deaths are 3.
Speaking at the press conference held today, Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla stated that islanders that are stranded in Male’ and wish to return to their islands are facing difficulties. It was decided previously that these locals will be allowed to travel to their home islands after arrangements by respective councils. However, due to the recent community spread, this has been changed and those given permission to return to their islands should have arrived Male’ after April 1st and for a special reason.
Further, Minister of Tourism revealed that the lockdown, which was implemented on 15th April, has had a positive impact on the number of confirmed cases. ‘It has been significantly reduced. This is the result of the patience of the public. Therefore, if this example is shown in the following two weeks, the surge can be lowered.’
