Health Protection Agency’s COVID-19 Case Updates on 14th May as of 01:00pm, confirmed an additional 13 cases of COVID-19 infection in Maldives. The cases were 8 Maldivians and 5 Bangladeshis. This totaled the number of confirmed cases in the country to 968. Maldives has also reported the fourth COVID19 related death.

On 13th May, Maldives reported its fourth coronavirus related death after a renowned local businessman in intensive care died. According to Health Protection Agency, the 88-year-old died at 11.15pm, while being treated at the Dharumavantha Hospital in Male city after he tested positive on April 30 for the Covid-19 respiratory disease.

Hussein Abdullah, a native of the island of Maroshi in the northern Shaviyani atoll, is the founder of leading trading company MHA, which was found in the mid-90s as one of the first private companies registered in the Maldives. Over the years, the company became one of the leading wholesalers, importers and distributors of internationally recognized brands of food and beverage, personal care, hygiene and cosmetics products.

On the same day, Health Protection Agency (HPA) said that the lockdown in capital Male, which was set to expire on 14th May, will remain in place for another 14 days. The lockdown was initially ordered on April 15 for two weeks and was extended twice before. The implementation of this has resulted in a positive impact on the number of confirmed cases, according to authorities.
