In a significant move toward environmental stewardship, the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy joined hands with CROSSROADS Maldives in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing ceremony on December 11, 2023. The collaboration focuses on crucial aspects such as awareness, knowledge sharing, capacity building, and supporting the recognition of Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measures (OECMs) in line with OECMs guidelines.
The joint effort initiated a program titled "Marine Discovery," a pilot program aimed at creating awareness about coral restoration and the rich biodiversity of the Maldives. Speaking on the importance of awareness, Deputy Minister Hassaan Mohamed highlighted its pivotal role in preserving the Maldives' biodiversity. Understanding the delicate nature of ecosystems empowers individuals to make informed decisions and take responsible actions, fostering a sense of environmental stewardship.
Information dissemination is central to the program, and the inaugural session involved 20 students visiting the Maldives Discovery Centre and Marine Discovery Centre at CROSSROADS Maldives. The students received insights into coral restoration, biodiversity, and the cultural significance of the Maldives, marking the beginning of an ongoing awareness, capacity-building, and knowledge-sharing initiative. Future programs are planned to encompass diverse demographics, recognizing the community's perception of their environment as instrumental in shaping their interactions with it.
The MoU underscores a shared commitment to protecting and conserving the country's natural environment. Mr. Michael Marshall, CEO of S Hotels and Resorts by Singha Estate, emphasized that sustainable practices are not only part of their ethos but also integral to their operations. The signing of the MoU reaffirms their dedication to supporting the Ministry's vision through cooperation and coordination.
The partnership with CROSSROADS Maldives reflects a significant step toward delivering comprehensive information and addressing capacity gaps. CROSSROADS' mission of "building big, protecting the small" remains a guiding principle in the pursuit of sustainability in the Maldives. The collaboration strives to maintain the delicate equilibrium between the natural surroundings and the vibrant experiences offered by CROSSROADS, marking a commendable commitment to marine conservation and environmental responsibility.
