As World Environment Day and World Oceans Day approach, and interest in marine conservation grows with the release of Sir David Attenborough’s new film Ocean, Coco Collection is inviting travellers to take part in something deeper than just a holiday.
Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu, part of the renowned Coco Collection, sits within the UNESCO-listed Baa Atoll and is leading the way in sustainable travel by combining tropical comfort with real conservation work. Guests can experience a unique escape where their stay directly contributes to protecting the ocean.
At the heart of these efforts is the resort’s dedication to marine conservation. Ongoing projects include coral restoration guided by the in-house marine biologist, turtle rescue and rehabilitation in partnership with the Olive Ridley Project, and turtle nest monitoring to protect hatchlings. The resort is home to the Maldives' first veterinary-run turtle rescue centre, where guests can visit, witness turtle feedings, or even sign up in advance to volunteer.
These initiatives are especially relevant now, as turtle hatching season begins. Following World Turtle Day on 23 May, guests are invited to take part in weekly marine talks and interactive conservation activities to build a deeper connection with marine life.
In 2024 alone, the Olive Ridley Project’s team recorded 168 turtle nests, over 5,200 successful hatchings, and nearly 3,500 turtle sightings. Since 2013, more than 40,000 sea turtle encounters have been documented, with Coco Collection associates contributing the most in the Maldives.
The resort also features guided snorkelling and diving adventures, along with a wide range of water sports and cultural activities through the Coco Experiences programme. As part of the upcoming World Environment and Oceans Day celebrations, guests can take part in events like tree planting, a themed Maldivian high tea, sustainability-focused dinners, and presentations led by the resort’s Marine Educator and the Olive Ridley Project team.
Recognised by the Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards 2024, Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu stands out not just for its natural beauty and local charm, but also for its strong commitment to environmental stewardship. Whether you're an ocean lover, a conservation enthusiast, or simply seeking a more meaningful getaway, the resort offers a chance to make every moment count—both for yourself and the planet.
