The Dubai World Cup 2020, one of the world's richest horse races and a premier annual sporting event in the United Arab Emirates, has been postponed to next year. It was planned to take place on 28th of March.
Announced by the Dubai Media Office, the 25th edition of the race has been moved to ensure the safety of all those taking part. The Dubai World Cup is a thoroughbred horse race held annually since 1996 and contested at the Meydan Racecourse. It sees top-calibre horses from all over the world – America, Europe, Australia, South Africa, Hong Kong and Japan – compete for $35 million in prize money.
However, the major international event is much more than a race. The Dubai World Cup Carnival is a lead up to the Dubai World Cup that features nine race meetings with horses from around the world.
The Gulf Arab state has temporarily banned all foreigners, except diplomats, from entering the country as it tries to contain the spread of the coronavirus that has been linked to two deaths in the country. There have been 153 confirmed infections.
