Velassaru Maldives has unveiled its latest initiative, the Velassaru Coral Project, designed to actively involve guests in marine conservation while promoting coral restoration and marine biodiversity. This unique project allows visitors to play a hands-on role in rebuilding the region’s coral reefs, deepening their connection with the ocean and its ecosystems.
The project invites guests to purchase a coral frame, which is then adorned with coral fragments collected and secured by Velassaru’s marine team. Each frame comes with a personalised plaque, giving participants the opportunity to leave a lasting legacy in the Maldives. Over the next two years, guests will receive biannual updates on the progress of their coral, with photos and videos documenting its growth.
Through this initiative, Velassaru aims to educate guests on the critical role coral reefs play in sustaining marine life. Though they cover only a small portion of the ocean floor, coral reefs are home to 25% of all marine species, supporting fish, invertebrates, and other sea creatures. Guests will gain a deeper understanding of how these fragile ecosystems are vital for both marine life and local communities.
Both certified and novice divers are invited to explore the artificial reef near Velassaru’s Immersion Dive Centre, where professional guides lead dives and provide insights into the coral regeneration process. A key feature of the reef is “The Dome”, a 4-meter by 6-meter structure placed 10 meters below the surface on September 12, 2024. This impressive site serves as an accessible dive destination for Velassaru guests to explore and contribute to the ongoing coral restoration efforts.
During these dives, guests are encouraged to monitor the health of the corals, ensuring that fragments remain securely attached with zip ties and fishing line. In addition to enhancing the guest experience, the Velassaru Coral Project collects important data for coral research. Each dive includes an assessment of coral health, tracking factors like colour, size, and species, as well as monitoring environmental conditions such as water temperature, which is crucial for preventing coral bleaching.
The project also observes local wildlife, with occasional shark sightings near the artificial reef. The team hopes that as the coral and fish populations grow, these predators will return in greater numbers, contributing to the balance of the ecosystem.
Data from the project will be shared with Coral Watch, a global database dedicated to coral health and conservation. By participating in the Velassaru Coral Project, guests not only help restore the Maldives’ coral reefs but also contribute to global coral preservation efforts. This immersive experience encourages marine conservation, offering guests a meaningful way to connect with and protect the oceans for future generations.
