Fairmont Maldives, Sirru Fen Fushi has announced that have partnered with design-focused electric car brand, Polestar to provide sustainable airport transfers for guests. The luxurious resort is situated in the pristine Shaviyani atoll, which is accessed through a scenic seaplane ride.
The Polestar 2 will be offering guests the journey from the runway to the resort by giving a ride in the sleek interiors to the seaplane lounge, located a little way from Velana International Airport. This new experience is a valuable addition to the sustainability initiatives at Fairmont Maldives including Solar Farm, Coralarium and the newly-established Sustainability Lab.
Now guests booking with Fairmont Maldives will be received at the airport by a representative of the resort, who will escort them to the seaplane check-in, where their private Polestar 2 awaits. Designed from sustainable materials, Polestar 2 is an advanced, progressive and unique electric car that reduces environmental impact by limits. The height of the car allows great passenger views and the short drive to the seaplane lounge will emit x3 less Co2 than a petrol car. The car is run on water-cooled battery packs that lie beneath the cabin.
Fairmont Maldives has always put sustainable practices at the forefront of its operations. The resort is home to a dedicated solar farm and promotes best practices such as reducing water consumption and usage of local produce in restaurants.
By far the most impressive sustainability project of the resort is the Coralarium, an underwater art gallery and coral regeneration project by famed British eco-artist, Jason deCaires Taylor. With the objective of capturing the natural formation of coral, the Colalarium features rising sculptures that provide abundant spaces for marine life to thrive.
Moreover, the Sustainability Lab at the resort optimizes recycling and reusing by converting ocean waste into souvenirs with the aid of specialized machinery. Ghost nets and Plastic is transformed into luggage tags, stationary and more, reducing the waste that ends up in the ocean.
For young travelers, a Turtle Ranger Programme engages kids in various conservation techniques such as helping marine biologists do Photo ID tracking data. Guests can also partake in protecting turtle nests, help hatchlings reach the sea and rescue turtles from ghost nets and collect crucial tracking data to monitor migration patterns.
Each initiative of Fairmont Maldives’ 'Save the Ocean' programme centers around three projects; Reef Conservation & Protection, Sustainability Lab and Educational Awareness. By carrying out such projects, the resort strives to save the ocean and conserve the marine biodiversity in the Maldives.
