In Dusit Thani Maldives, guests can connect with the indigenous culture of Maldivians through these soulful experiences.

Cadjan Weaving

Maldivians take pride in stating that we use every bit of the coconut palm in our daily lives and the coconut palm leaves are no exception. For centuries, the local inhabitants have used the leaves to thatch rooftops and make brooms, the former still characterized in many resort architectures. With innovation and technology, more modern materials have replaced these users, however, coconut leaves still remain up to date a staple of daily life.

At Dusit Thani, guests can unlock the secrets of Cadjan weaving with local experts as they share their knowledge and guidance on how to create a surprisingly strong and impermeable roof tile.

Rope Making Workshop

Rope making or ‘Roanu Veshun’ in Dhivehi is a traditional practice that has been passed down for many generations. The rope is crafted using different parts of the coconut palm, binding the strong fibres together to create a high tensile strength. In earlier days, rope made in this way was used for boats and the construction of traditional houses. In today, coir rope is used for unconventional uses such as wrapping and packaging gifts.

With a rope-making workshop at the resort, guests can learn this talented skill from local artisans, transforming different parts of the coconut palm into a strong, fully functioning rope.

Island Discovery with Dusit Safeeru

In the local tongue, Safeeru means Ambassador and guests can join the cultural Ambassador at Dusit Thani to embark on an authentic island discovery. Many intriguing activities are featured in the experience including a complimentary sunset cruise to explore the various neighbouring islands and to spot the marvellous marine life that frequents the horizon at golden hour. Guests will also be able to educate themselves about the lesser-known features of traditional dhoni boats – a feat of architecture handmade by local boat builders.

In addition to this, the island discovery experience will also host a weekly interactive presentation that taps into the history and culture of the Mudhdhoo island, amusing guests with profound knowledge about the destination and the island.

Local Island Tour

Step onto a local island near the resort to first-hand witness and learn about the Maldivian lifestyle from the residents themselves. Closely knitted island communities and the celebrated Maldivian hospitality can be seen clearly from a guided tour around the island.

Widening the discovering route a little more, guests can also choose to enjoy a Mamma Lunch during their time on the island where homemade meals will be prepared in the traditional style for guests to enjoy and appreciate by local households.
