Gili Lankanfushi’s Marine Giveaway to Mother Nature

Coral reefs are some of the most biodiverse, yet most endangered ecosystems in the world. The Maldives is known for coral reefs, all of which come in spectacular colours and unique varieties and more importantly, home to many marine creatures.

Gili Lankanfushi is the number one luxury resort in the Maldives, that prioritizes its definition of being an eco-friendly resort and is blended seamlessly into the remarkable landscape of a natural environment.

The resort says that the best way to protect coral reefs globally is to remove the current threats; support conservation, take care when snorkeling & diving, and most importantly, reduce the use of carbon footprint in one’s daily lives.

The underwater world is an astonishing place filled with the beauty of nature and tranquility for divers. And so, Gili Lankanfushi takes the responsibility to protect this whole new world that thrives underneath the ocean. For reefs that have already been damaged, Gili Lankanfushi does a small part in assisting the recovery of coral reefs.

At Gili Lankanfushi resort, they rehabilitate the coral reefs by nursing corals on ropes and later transplanting them onto degraded reef areas. Every rope is initially planted with 50 tiny living coral fragments and then the corals are nursed in the lagoons for one year and later the ropes are transplanted to One Palm Island reef if conditions fall suitable.

It is expected that as time goes by, this process allows corals to get stronger, grow bigger and improve the health of the One Palm Island Reef. Thanks to generous donors, the resort now has over 260 coral lines planted as of March 2020, resulting in the growth of healthy corals.
