Ellaidhoo Maldives by Cinnamon maybe well known as a place for divers to share their sheer happiness with the diverse marine life around North Ari Atoll, but it is recognized for more than just the unmatched experiences it offers. Staying true to the sustainability promise of the resort, it has been contributing wholeheartedly to island innovation in the forefront of sustainable planning.
For this contribution of over half a decade, Green Globe has awarded the resort with Gold Status for the many notable green initiatives being carried out in the island.
Plastic Reduction Initiatives
Since the ambitious decision by the government to make Maldives Plastic Free by 2023, resorts have been stretched to squeeze out sustainable methods of being functional. Ellaidhoo Maldives’ Save Ocean from Plastic campaign is an already running project deemed a colorful solution to an urgent problem.
The resort replaced its plastic garbage bags for large bins with washable cotton bags that can be reused. In addition to this, guest laundry bags which were previously plastic have been replaced with handmade paper bags from old Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts Magazines. In March 2020 the resort switched from single use plastic bottles to refillable water flagons and customized, reusable drinking bottles which are gifted to guests upon check-in.
Within a one year period, the resort made substantial progress in the overall reduction of plastic waste. It successfully diverted 915.86 kg of plastic waste from landfill and marine environments.
Reducing Carbon Footprint – Solar Powered System
Totalling to USD 29,640 in savings, Ellaidhoo ditched 59.280 litres of diesel by replacing it with 192,008 kWh of solar energy generated from the 428 solar panels inhouse. This infrastructure was one of the smartest investments by the resort that is harnessing solar energy as an affordable and clean energy source.
When choosing to experience the otherworldly feeling of being submerged in the ocean, know that along with the experiences you’ll fall head-over-flippers for, Ellaidhoo Maldives by Cinnamon also contributes wisely to the future of sustainability.
