In a statement released by Tourism Minister of Greece, Harry Theoharis, the country has announced opening its doors to international travelers from May 14, 2021 onwards. This is part of a major economic recovery plan for Greece, a country heavily dependent on international travel, especially German and British visitors. Greece looks forward to welcoming all persons who have been vaccinated or who test negative this summer.
The year 2020 was devastating for the tourism sector of Greece, that saw a drop of 14 billion in revenue generated and a steap decline of 76% tourist arrivals in 2020 compared to the previous year. Since the announcement, hotels have reportedly seen immense rise in the rates of bookings and some have already been booked for 70% occupancy.
Greece has strategically placed a list of safety measures for residents and tourist alike to follow while in public places – including the mandatory use of face masks, social distancing and being subject to random COVID19 testing. The major difference this year will be rapid testing, thanks to which positive cases will immediately be placed in quarantine.
As of February 22, Greece has vaccinated 725,000 citizens and is on the run to becoming one of the top 5 countries in the world who have vaccinated a major population against COVID19. The Minister announced that after the most vulnerable people are vaccinated, the health authorities will prioritize people working in the hospitality sector.
Members of the World Travel & Tourism Council have prasied the roadmap to recovery announced by the Greek government for its tremendous efforts and strategic steps taken to restart international travel. Furthermore, Greece being one of the first countries to announce the launch of digital vaccination certificates for all persons that have received the two doses of the vaccine against the COVID-19 was an example that WTTC encourages other countries to look up to.
“This year and forever all you want is Greece. For the smile to return to your lips, with the hope you will take your life back all you want is Greece.” the Minister said.
