Santhi Mariyanbu

This translates to “the terrifying tooth fairy”. It was said that this supernatural creature walks around carrying a sack full of new teeth. As you slept, Santhi Mariyanbu would replace your dirty or rotten teeth with beautiful, shiny teeth. Sounds nice? Well, if you wake up and be rude to her, you might as well expect worse teeth than before.

Kandu Rasgefaanu

This means “Sea King” in translation. Kandu Rasgefaanu, ruled from a magnificent palace under the sea. The king’s pregnant daughter was struggling to give birth and none of the ocean palace’s midwives were able to help her. A poor apprentice midwife was finally brought from a local island to the ocean palace to help her and the baby was delivered safely.

Rewarding her, the king granted her a fish everyday simply by plucking it out of the lagoon. Her only condition was that she had to promise to never reveal to anyone how she got the fish, but sadly, she broke the promise by revealing to her husband and she never received fish again.

Safaru Kaiydha

This means “Unwelcome Visitor”. Safaru Kaiydha is a terrifyingly mysterious woman who appears once a year on a full moon, along with her seven daughters. Legend says that she would go to people’s homes while they slept and use their water wells to bathe her children, leaving behind a huge mess for the owners to clean up. Beware – you can never complain or chase her away as she is vicious and violent and will attack anyone who upsets her.

Foolhu Dhigu Handi

This translates to “The Sinister Spirit”. Foolhu Dhigu Handi was a spirit with a greyish skeletal body, wild, matted hair, sharp, jagged teeth and a long rope-like navel. Everyday, he would secretly perform disturbing rituals at the cemetery by pouring grave dirt on his head.

However, one day, a woman saw him by accident and enraged at being disturbed, the spirit haunted her for several days. The woman finally told her husband what was going on and through a few tricks and a gruesome attack with a knife and some chilli paste, the creature was defeated once and for all.

Handi Dhon Kamana

This means “The Mysterious Woman” in translation. Dhon Kamana was a mysterious and extraordinarily beautiful woman who was secretly a spirit with great powers. She married a mortal man, Ahmed, who was unaware of her powers, placing three conditions; never watch her while she is by the well, never watch her cooking and never ask where she gest fish and other food”.

The duo had 3 children and lived happily, until one day, an old friend of Ahmed, Thakurufaanu” who was a respected practitioner of magic revealed the truth.

Ahmed decided to break the promise and watch her while she is by the well to which he finds himself baffled as she catches a fish with long, sharp teeth and her face was hideous and wild. Ahmed was terrified and didn’t know what to do, but Dhon Kamana knew the truth and so left to the sea and disappeared forever. Ahmed never remarried.
