The iconic Kandooma Right is one of the best breaks in the Maldives. The fun surf break attracts surfers from around the world. In partnership with The Perfect Wave Travel, Holiday Inn Kandooma offers exclusive surf packages for experienced surfers during the peak surf season between April - October.
To maintain the exclusivity of this surf zone, surfers wishing to surf between April to October each year are required to book their surf passes and stay with The Perfect Wave Travel. Surf lessons and coaching for beginners is available in safe and controlled conditions supervised by the resident certified instructors from The Perfect Wave Travel. Surfing photo and video packages are available upon request all year round.
However, apart from being a surfer’s paradise, Kandooma is also well-known for the wave energy project, the world's first 'surf waves to electricity' project. It was initiated by the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) Graduate University together with the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Maldives and Kokyo Tatemono Company Limited of Tokyo, Japan.
According to the resort, the preliminary phase of this project is expected to commence in April 2021 and will generate 20 kilowatts of electricity, which amounts to 2% - 3% in diesel consumption used for the power generators and will ultimately be increased to 20% - 30% in the future, from the Wave Energy Converter units.
This sustainable form of energy will continuously be generated irrespective of the time of day or weather conditions and help the resort reduce our carbon emissions. When implemented across the Maldives, the use of sustainable and clean energy will be highly beneficial, given how susceptible the Maldives is to the effects of climate change.
