Kitesurfing can be called an extreme sport that combine techniques of several sports into one. With the right talent, kitesurfing can feel like effortlessly riding a magic carpet on the sea. Since its popularity began in the Maldives, the island of Kulhudhuffushi has been producing record-breaking talent into the field.
Kiteboarding Kulhudhuffushi is an association that has been organizing several annual events to celebrate the sport. The most recent was organized on the occasion of Eid. ‘Hatharudhan 1441’ kicked off at 4 p.m. on July 31 and continued on for 24 hours. Over 40 talents participated, kitesurfing into the night. Several other activities were carried out, according to officials from the association.
The event took place in the Airport Beach area of Kulhudhuffushi. A mass crowd gathered to admire the surfers. Since many surfers were already on the island, the association aimed to highlight the opportunities available on the island for beginners and pros alike to engage in this exhilarating sport.
Some other successful events by Kiteboarding Kulhudhuffushi include their annual trip that took place on the beautiful island of H.DH Naivaadhoo. Though this trip takes place during Fitr Eid, it was delayed due to COVID 19 this year. However, over 40 kite surfers participated in this event, including beginners, videographers and photographers as well.
Kulhudhuffushi surfers proudly hold the National record for the longest distance covered on a kitesurf. 9 kite surfers took part in their event “Gamees Dhashah Vai” that took that 35 miles from Kulhudhuffushi to Sh. Funadhoo in a challenging 4 hour surf.
Though challenges arise to the growth of the sport on the island, Kiteboarders Kulhudhuffushi are headstrong in promoting the activity. They inspired youth with events where 2 time World Champion Kitesurfer Youri Zoon participated and surfed along with local surfers.
