How COMO Cocoa Island Created Unique Overwater Villas Inspired by Dhoni Boats

The COMO Cocoa Island, located among South Malé’s coral atolls just a 40-minute speedboat transfer from the international airport, features one of the best overwater bungalows in the world. Each of these 34 overwater suites and villas are uniquely inspired by dhoni boats, the gently curving wooden vessels used by local fishermen.

Simple wooden walkways built above the shallow lagoon connects the villas, forming an overwater boardwalk pathway. While some villas have private pools, each has its own private terrace, perfect to slip into the warm Maldivian sea right from your room. Views from the floor-to-ceiling windows look across the watery expanse and horizon, as if you’re floating on the ocean.

The Dhoni Water Villas are well-known for its unique design shaped like a traditional Maldivian fishing boat. The generous living room is a calming space to relax, while the overwater private terrace has a staircase that leads to the lagoon’s warm waters. You have a private sundeck with loungers and a dining table. Inside this villa, you’ll feel like you’re floating on the ocean.

The dhoni-shaped Loft Water Villas, however, are more spacious, making them perfect for a family stay. The design is about bringing the outside space in, with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the water and a private terrace touching the ocean. They feature an expansive lower level living area and a master bedroom on the mezzanine.

The resort also has a new overwater villa with pool, the second largest one after the two COMO Water Villas. This villa features a large terrace with a 10-metre private swimming pool, offering some of the island’s best views of the iconic Maldivian sunset. The villa was designed with space in mind: there’s a living room, an en suite master bedroom, a private study and a gym. The villa can be connected to the COMO Sunset Water Villa via an overwater wooden walkway, or closed off for complete privacy.

COMO Cocoa Island will return on October 1st 2020. Check out the resort’s exclusive offers
