Following leniency in COVID-19 travel restrictions, due to popular demand, Iberia Airlines has commenced flights to The Maldives. Iberia Airlines will be operating flights to the Maldives in July and all throughout August this year.
A special ceremony was held at Maldives' main international airport, Velana International Airport (VIA) to mark the occasion. A large number of tourists arrived on the airline's maiden flight which arrived at VIA on Saturday afternoon.
Spain is one of the markets from which a large number of tourists visited the Maldives during the pre-pandemic period. However, the number of tourist arrivals dropped significantly amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The commencement of flights between Spain and Maldives is expected to open the market to tourists and increase the number of travelers.
Following the success of chartered flights to the Maldives for the summer season this year, Iberia Airlines has added the Maldives to its winter season routes. For the winter season, the airline will operate two weekly flights between its hub in Madrid, Spain to Malé, Maldives from December 2021 through February 2022.
