Hydroxychloroquine is an anti-malarial drug produced mostly in India. While President Donald Trump calls it a "game-changer" in the fight against COVID-19, HCQ is generally prescribed as a treatment for rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and malaria. Health officials around the world emphasize that there is no evidence that any drug, including HCQ, can cure or prevent a COVID-19 infection.
A Ministry of External Affairs official said HCQ is high on demand globally and several countries have made requests to India. India has cleared first list of 13 countries for Hydroxychloroquine: Maldives, USA, Spain, Germany, Bahrain, Brazil, Nepal, Bhutan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Seychelles, Mauritius and Dominican Republic.
Maldives thanks India for exporting the HCQ, which is being demanded by countries around the globe. “Thank you government of India, for approving Maldives’ request for Hydroxychloroquine, which is being called a game changer in the fight against #Covid19. A friend in need is truly a friend indeed!” says Foreign Minister Abdullah Shahid.
