The lagoon at InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort has been officially recognized as an Important Shark & Ray Area (ISRA), highlighting its significance as a habitat for manta rays. This achievement comes as a result of the resort’s collaboration with the Manta Trust, a prominent organization dedicated to manta ray research and conservation.

Extensive research by the resort’s on-site team has played a crucial role in securing this recognition, making the lagoon a priority for conservation initiatives. The designation also contributes to broader efforts to establish the area as a Marine Protected Area (MPA).

Since partnering with the Manta Trust in 2019, the InterContinental Maldives has capitalized on its location near a newly discovered juvenile reef manta ray feeding ground. The surrounding waters are home to a thriving population of reef manta rays, offering researchers unique opportunities to study these magnificent creatures.

In addition to the Maamunagau lagoon, other nearby locations, such as Dhikkuredhoo and Madivaafaru, have also been designated as ISRAs. These areas, located about 30 minutes from the resort, are popular for snorkeling with mantas, especially during mass feeding events that occur between June and November.

Jess Haines, a PhD researcher with the Manta Trust, expressed her enthusiasm for this milestone. She noted that the designation of multiple areas in Raa Atoll as ISRAs showcases the value of data collection, made possible through the resort's support. Haines looks forward to utilizing this data in her research to further protect these vital marine habitats for young manta rays.

The recognition of the lagoon marks a significant step toward ensuring the conservation of these critical marine ecosystems.
