Introducing a Sanitizer from Maldives’ Coconut Water

Marine Biologist of The University of Milano-Bicocca, a public university located in Milan, Italy, and Director of Marine Research & High Education Centre (MaRHE) in Faafu Magoodhoo, reveals that the idea behind this sanitizer is to easily produce something in a day. The Maldives now has a sanitizer produced from a rich natural resource in the country.

The hand sanitizer gel can easily be produced by both the Resorts and the local community. The main ingredients can be extracted from coconuts and the perfume from local flower petals such as frangipani. MaRHE states that the gel has been prepared according to World Health Organization (WHO) Guidelines on Hand Hygiene in Health Care.

Paolo Galli, Director of the MaRHE Center: We are honoured to be present in the Maldives on the island of Magoodhoo and to offer the local community our small contribution to defeating the Coronavirus. We are available to provide the sanitizing gel recipe to anyone who asks for it and to assist them in the preparation. In this difficult time for all humanity, it is important to work together.

The Marine Research and High Education Center was developed to carry out research and academic activities in the fields of environmental sciences and marine biology, science of tourism and human geography, to teach how to protect this fragile environment and its biodiversity, how to use and manage its resources in a responsible way. The University of Milan Bicocca has also donated disposable face masks to the entire Magoodhoo community.
