Kuda Villingili and The Wave Project Bring Surf Therapy to the Maldives

Wednesday 3rd of July 2024

The importance of 'green spaces' for mental health is well-documented, but recent studies highlight the profound impact of 'blue spaces.' A Pan-European research initiative, Blue Health, investigated the effects of blue spaces on health from 2016 to 2020. Dr. Mireia Gascon noted, “A greater exposure to blue spaces correlates with improved mental health, wellbeing, and more physical activity.” Intriguingly, water’s uniquely restorative effect gives blue spaces an edge over green spaces.

Recognized by the NHS and prescribed by doctors in the UK, surf therapy has become an established form of therapeutic support. Spending time in nature, especially in blue spaces, reduces stress hormones like cortisol and epinephrine. Combined with the physical activity and satisfaction of learning to surf, this unconventional treatment offers exciting benefits.

This summer, Kuda Villingili Maldives is collaborating with the UK-based charity, The Wave Project, to bring surf therapy to one of the most beautiful blue spaces in the world: the Maldives. The Wave Project has years of experience transforming the lives of young people through the therapeutic benefits of the sea, surfing, and having fun in the water. During their residency at the resort, they will lead thrilling surf retreats.

While the Maldives is celebrated for its crystal-clear waters and bright-white beaches, its potential as a surfing hotspot is often overlooked. Kuda Villingili is one of the best-located resorts for surfers, just moments away from the famed Chicken’s Break. This long, lively left can hold swells from 3ft to over 10ft, providing wave rides up to an impressive 500m.

Kuda Villingili’s Soul Searching at Chickens Retreats will explore how these blue spaces can significantly impact young people's mental health and wellbeing. The retreats focus on outdoor activities to explore the Maldives' renowned beauty and nature. With a mix of mindfulness and breathwork, along with exhilarating excursions such as surfing, paddle boarding, yoga, and meditation, guests are invited to experience the wonders of the water and immerse themselves in idyllic blue spaces.

Soul Searching at Chickens will run from July 26th to August 26th. To view the Soul Searching at Chickens brochure. To book a retreat, email reservations@kudavillingili.com.
