Le Méridien Maldives Earns Green Globe Certification

Monday 27th of January 2025

Le Méridien Maldives Resort & Spa has proudly achieved the Green Globe Certification, affirming its unwavering commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. This prestigious recognition highlights the resort’s ongoing efforts to operate in harmony with the natural beauty of Lhaviyani Atoll while providing guests with meaningful experiences that emphasize environmental awareness.

Green Globe, a globally respected certification program for the travel and tourism industry, evaluates organizations based on strict criteria across 44 certification standards and over 380 compliance indicators. This ensures that properties like Le Méridien Maldives adhere to the highest international benchmarks for economic, social, and environmental sustainability.

The resort has successfully integrated sustainable practices throughout its operations, creating numerous opportunities for guests to engage with the environment. One of its key initiatives is the Marine Conservation Hub, where visitors can actively participate in marine conservation efforts. The ‘Marine Master’ program, offered in collaboration with Marriott Bonvoy’s Good Travel initiative, provides guests with immersive experiences like Reef Explorer, Turtle Quest, and Build A Coral Reef. These programs, guided by the resort’s resident marine biologist, aim to deepen participants’ understanding of the fragile marine ecosystems in the Maldives while contributing directly to their preservation. For younger guests, the Kids Hub offers fun and educational activities that foster a love and respect for nature.

A standout feature of the resort’s sustainability efforts is its impressive 430-square-meter hydroponic greenhouse, one of the largest in the Maldives. The greenhouse produces 30 kilograms of pesticide-free vegetables every day, using recycled rainwater and advanced farming techniques. Guests can enjoy fresh, locally grown produce at The Harvest Table or take part in the Family Foraging program, an interactive culinary experience that promotes sustainable living practices.

Le Méridien Maldives also prioritizes energy efficiency and resource conservation. Solar installations generating 548 kWp help reduce diesel consumption by 20% annually, while water-saving measures, such as tap aerators and wastewater recycling for landscaping, further minimize the resort's environmental impact. Additionally, the resort’s onsite bottling plant eliminates the need for approximately 225,000 plastic bottles each year, and its eco-composting systems convert organic waste into valuable fertilizer.

The resort is equally committed to protecting native vegetation, mangroves, and coral reefs, critical to preserving the Maldives’ unique ecosystems. These efforts are part of Le Méridien’s broader commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable tourism.

Thomas Schult, General Manager of Le Méridien Maldives Resort & Spa, emphasized that the Green Globe Certification is a testament to the resort’s dedication to sustainability. “By embedding eco-friendly practices into our guest experiences, we aim to inspire meaningful connections with the environment while safeguarding it for future generations,” he said.

Located on the serene island of Thilamaafushi in Lhaviyani Atoll, Le Méridien Maldives Resort & Spa combines timeless European elegance with the natural splendor of the Maldives. With a strong focus on sustainability, the resort offers a range of luxurious accommodations, diverse dining options, cultural experiences, and family-friendly activities, all while prioritizing eco-conscious practices that celebrate both the environment and meaningful guest connections.
