While Baros Island welcomes travellers to reside and relax, the ocean beckons travellers to plunge into the blues to explore a whole new world unlike never before. Baros Maldives is expected to reopen on October 1st for its beloved guests.
The Marine Center of Baros Maldives now gives guests a unique gift of nature by allowing them to adopt their very own coral. Guests can transplant their coral on to an underwater frame in which the coral grows forever and ever, contributing stunningly to the longevity and beauty of the Baros turquoise lagoons and reefs, which is home to a variety of fish and endangered species.
The transplantation process will only use corals that will not survive on the seafloor. These redundant yet living fragments of corals are then used for transplantation with the marine biologist creating and dedicating an underwater frame for the participating guests to transplant corals to and attach a customized name tag for it.
Following the transplantation of a frame, the Marine Centre Team will send updates on the growth of guests’ coral frame by email every six months for up to two years so guests can see how their coral “babies” are growing. Growth rates of corals are subject to vary due to many external factors.
In 2018, Baros took a further step into coral preservation by creating a new Coral Lines Nursery in the lagoon around the Over Water Villas where coral fragments are rehabilitated and left to develop naturally on the lines for several months. When they reach a larger size, they are transplanted onto the natural reefs. With this high-efficiency and low-tech coral reef recovery technique, the resort hopes to speed up the growth of the most vibrant and fastest-growing species of coral, called Acropora.
