Maalhos: Home to Maldives’ First Eco Centre

The first Eco Centre to be established in a habited island in Maldives has opened up in Baa Atoll Maalhos, The Eco Centre was inaugurated by the current speaker of the parliament and former president of Maldives Mohamed Nasheed.

Nasheed pointed out that one of the main challenges faced by islands is the responsible management of waste. The Centre was opened under the “Namoonaa Baa Atoll” movement organized by Soneva Fushi, Common Seas, Maalhos, Dharavandhoo and Kihaadhoo islands in Baa Atoll.

Sonu Shivdasani, the founder and CEO of Soneva praised the people of Maalhos in making the movement a success. He highlights that with the installation of a water plant, the use of plastic bottles has also significantly decreased.

Although this is the first Eco Centre in a habited island, Kuramathi island resort has a ten year old Eco Centre, one of the most important venues in the resort.

With a team of professionals including, a Marine Biologist and Horticulturist, the resort’s Eco Centre is the focal point for environmental initiatives, integrating eco-friendly practices into resort operations. It is also home to a 16 meter Sperm Whale skeleton, along with a variety of interesting facts about other diverse marine life
