Maldives Among 'Most Searched For' Holidays Post Lockdown

What comes to your mind when you hear “Maldives”? Sun… Beach… Sand? Once upon a time, if you asked someone about the Maldives, they wouldn’t know that the country even exists.

But once Maldives realized the potential that it has, with its god-blessed natural beauty and tropical greens, the country expanded its blessings to share with the world and now, whenever someone hears “the sunny side of life”, Maldives is the word that rings a bell.

The country has been a favourite destination for many travellers and with holiday-makers flooding the Maldives every single year, tourism gradually became the main source of income for the Maldives. However, this year, Maldives lost its lucky charm to the year 2020.

The global pandemic, COVID-19, is the main culprit for this as the outbreak of it resulted in many travellers reluctant to jet off on a holiday, due to the increasing concerns of their safety. However, with travel restrictions easing down, many people are now looking for the perfect destination to squeeze in a late summer holiday, or are planning ahead for 2021.

Using Google Keyword Planner, Official-esta.com analyzed the countries that people are looking to travel to for a post-lockdown holiday using terms including “Flights to X” and “Holidays in X” and it is of utmost pride to announce that Maldives takes 2nd place, with a global annual search volume of 1,798,680 right after Italy which remains on top.

Jayne Forrester, Director of International Development at Official-esta.com commented that with the last few months throwing everyone’s lives and the travel industry into an unchartered territory, it’s natural that some people might be hesitant to return to travel.

She, however, highlights the importance of travel to generate revenue for the companies within the travel and tourism sector and ensure that further job losses are minimized in the industry. Jayne concludes that people must find a balance between enjoying travels and doing so in a safe and responsible manner, to prevent any further waves of the COVID-19 virus.
