Japan provides free financial aid of MVR 8,487,168 to the Maldives to assist in the country in battling COVID19 pandemic. This was announced by the Foreign Ministry of Maldives during early hours of 2nd May. While MVR 5،634،468 was donated through UNICEF, MVR 2،852،700 was provided through Red Crescent.
According to the Foreign Ministry, this finance will be invested in medical equipment and medicine as well as to establish systems required by schools for online education. The Ministry expresses gratitude to Japan and acknowledges that the country has played in big role in the economic development of Maldives.
Further, on 1st May, Foreign Ministry announced that companies in Singapore and Thailand have donated protective equipment and test kits to support the Maldives’ efforts to contain the coronavirus outbreak. Temasek Foundation, the charity arm of Singaporean investment company Temasek, donated 25 test kits with a capacity to do 5,000 tests and a total of 200 personal protective equipment (PPE) kits were donated by Thitithip Thanyakulthip, Consulting Manager of Maldives Experts, a Thailand-based travel agency with an exclusive focus on the Maldives.
