The Maldives has been warming up in the World Travel Awards after taking home several key accolades in the WTA’s Africa & Indian Ocean Category. The island nation took home the prestigious tile of Indian Ocean’s Leading Destination 2022 at the Africa & Indian Ocean Gala Ceremony held on 15th October at KICC, Kenya.

Along with the revered title, the destination also won the accolades for Indian Ocean’s Leading Beach Destination and Indian Ocean’s Leading Dive Destination. Moreover, Maldives Marketing & Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) has even managed to secure the title of Indian Ocean’s Leading Tourist Board. The corporation has been nominated for World’s Leading Tourist Board too.

Incepted in 1993, the World Travel Awards (WTA) are highly recognized as the ‘Oscars’ of the global tourism sector and deemed as the hallmark of industry excellence. The awards distinguish and celebrate the most acclaimed destinations across all sectors and segments of travel trade, tourism and hospitality industries. This year’s wins at WTA are notably significant for all who work in the Maldives tourism industry as 2022 marks the 50-year Golden Jubilee of Tourism in the Maldives.

With a number of accolades forming part of an admired collection, the Maldives aspires to bring more impressive accolades to its stellar lineup. The destination has been nominated for three coveted World Titles at the 29th WTA, including the most desired title of World’s Leading Destination. The other two nominees are for World’s Leading Beach Destination and World’s Most Romantic Destination.

During the previous two editions, Maldives won the title of World’s Leading Destination and has been nominated for the third time this year. Hoping to make a hat-trick in 2022, Maldives is striving for the triple win for the third consecutive time now- a critical moment as the country commemorates its Golden Year of Tourism.
