For most visitors, the Maldives is known for its clear waters and beautiful beaches. But for popular YouTuber Mark Wiens, it was the country’s rich food culture—especially its seafood—that stole the spotlight.
With over 11 million subscribers, Wiens is known for travelling the world to explore local cuisines. His recent trip took him to Hithadhoo in Addu, where he documented a full day of eating traditional Maldivian dishes.
Wiens described the Maldives as a “tuna paradise,” praising the variety and quality of fish-based meals. In one segment, he joined a local family for morning tea, where he sampled Mashuni, Kulhimas, and Rihaakuru. He even prepared Mashuni himself during the visit.
His journey also took him to an Addu field, where he tasted local produce and enjoyed Rihaakuru with coconut and spicy paste. The video captures his experience eating Bondibaiy and sweet treats made with fish, showcasing the diversity of Maldivian flavours.
Wiens later visited a local home to watch the traditional preparation of Addu Bondi, a famous sweet, and left after tasting the freshly made version.
The video also features Wiens at a café, where he tried fried and boiled fish, cassava, and bananas—further reflecting the deep connection between Maldivian food and the sea.
Having travelled and tasted dishes in countries across Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and beyond, Wiens placed Maldivian cuisine among the most memorable, urging food lovers to visit for the food experience alone.
