MMPRC Hosts ‘From the Sea to the Skillet’ Session to Showcase Maldives’ Culinary Roots

Monday 3rd of July 2023

Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) has hosted an insightful music and cuisine-filled breakout session as part of the Visit Maldives Storytellers Conference 2023. Titled ‘From the Sea to the Skillet’ the experience touched down on the destination’s culinary heritage and history of fisheries and was facilitated by Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO). During the breakout session, participants were informed about sustainable methods of fishing and the significant role of tuna in authentic Maldivian cuisine.

This enticing session was hosted at the Atoll Villa sandbank, where participants were welcomed accompanied by the rhythmic drumming of Boduberu music. The soothing background sounds and the enclosing crystalline waters all around set the stage for a lively and engaging ambiance for all visitors. MIFCO then proceeded to amuse partakers further by delving deep into the fisheries industry and its importance to Maldivians.

Through this session, participants were informed about the pole and line method of fishing practiced nationwide and how this serves as an example of sustainable fishing that can be replicated globally. In addition to the informative bits, the visitors were also given the opportunity to see masterful traditional fish-filleting skills and discover the local techniques that had been passed down through generations.

The culinary extravaganza concluded with a tempting exploration of flavours hailing from the Sunny Side of Life. Participants were delighted to sample a wide assortment of authentic delicacies like local short eats, paired with Falho Kandhi and watermelon juice. Additionally, a cooking class was also staged at the venue where they learned time-honoured recipes on how to make popular Maldivian meals like Mashuni and Mas Fen, guided by an expert chef. The chef exchanged secrets with the cooks about the ingredients and cooking techniques that make the native cuisine so fresh and unique.

As a souvenir to remember this soul-enriching experience, each attendee was given a special culinary-themed gift basket. Following the breakout session, the visitors took off for some relaxing time, venturing into the surrounding turquoise waters and digging their toes into the golden powder-soft sandbank. The ‘From the Sea to the Skillet’ session proved to be a success, highlighting sustainable fishing practices and local culinary traditions to participants.

With beautiful panoramic sceneries unfolding on all four sides, MMPRC fully capitalized on its ‘Redefining MICE’ concept, hosting the breakout session in one of the most serene and breathtaking locations chosen for such an endeavour. Three more breakout sessions are scheduled during the conference to indulge participants.
