The national airline, Maldivian, has begun flight operations to Colombo International Airport at Ratmalana (CAR), Sri Lanka.
Upon landing, 50-seater De Havilland Dash-8 received a water cannon salute at the airport, and passengers were also welcomed with gift packs from the Sri Lanka Tea Board followed by a traditional Kandyan dance performance.
This is a very historic landing as it marks the commencement of scheduled international regional flight operations from CAR after five decades. The schedule, for now, dictates that Maldivian will operate three weekly operations between the destinations, and it does have plans to increase the frequency with passenger demand.
Those who attended the event that celebrated the reopening of international flights were the Ambassador to the Republic of Maldives, Mr. Omar Abdul Razzak, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Maldives, Mr. A.M.J Sadig, Minister of Youth & Sports Mr. Namal Rajapaksa, State Minister of Aviation and Development of Export Zones Mr. D. V. Chanaka and other state ministers and officials
