Patina Maldives has once again demonstrated its dedication to sustainable tourism by achieving the EarthCheck Silver Certification for the second consecutive year. This accolade underscores the resort's commitment to environmentally conscious practices and business excellence that positively impacts both people and the environment.
“As we celebrate the EarthCheck Silver Certification for 2024, we reaffirm our resolute commitment to sustainable tourism and environmental stewardship,” said Antonio Saponara, General Manager of Patina Maldives. “This accolade underscores our dedication to perpetuality, marking a pivotal step towards a more sustainable future for Patina Maldives.”
Swimsol Solar Panel Installation
In partnership with Swimsol, the Maldives' leading solar energy provider, Patina Maldives is set to enhance its clean energy capabilities significantly. By October this year, an additional 1937kWp of solar panels will be operational. These panels will be distributed across the island, including 1MWp on a land bank on the East of the island and 937kWp on the rooftops of beach villas, F&B outlets, the FLOW Spa, dive center, Portico, kids club, and back-of-house buildings. The installation will also include an additional 2MWh of battery capacity, allowing the resort to rely solely on solar energy during daylight hours.
Coral Conservation and Ghost Net Projects
Patina Maldives is deeply invested in marine conservation, with a strong focus on preserving biodiversity through extensive coral conservation efforts. The resort has introduced coral ceramics workshops for special needs children, in collaboration with local NGOs, blending education with environmental stewardship. These workshops empower young minds to contribute to conservation, creating lasting impacts on both the community and the environment. Ongoing coral planting initiatives further enhance the marine ecosystem, promoting the health and diversity of coral reefs around the island.
Additionally, the resort’s ghost net projects address the critical issue of oceanic plastic pollution. By collecting and repurposing ghost nets into bracelets gifted to guests, Patina Maldives raises awareness about the dangers of plastic waste and encourages collective action to protect our oceans. These initiatives reflect the resort's commitment to nurturing a sustainable future and inspiring others to join in making a difference.
Sustainable Resort Build and Engineering
From its inception, the Fari Islands’ development, including Patina Maldives, has been guided by sustainable architecture and design. The project is the largest hospitality development globally to benefit from the extensive use of offsite manufacturing technology known as 'Mass Engineered Timber' (MET), which reduced carbon emissions by over 6,000 tons during production and transportation. Additionally, all the villas were prefabricated to minimize runoff into the marine ecosystem.
Departing from the conventional thatched roof structures prevalent in the Maldives, the villas and amenities at Patina Maldives were designed with flat roofs, allowing for easy mounting of solar panels. This innovative design enables the Fari Islands to host one of the largest solar installations in the Maldives, further solidifying Patina Maldives' position as a leader in sustainable luxury travel.
Patina Maldives, through its continuous and evolving sustainability initiatives, remains a beacon of responsible tourism, setting new standards for the industry and paving the way for a more sustainable future.
