35 years ago on 8th December, the leader of the Seven South Asian Countries (Maldives, India, Bhutan, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladeshi and Sri Lanka) had signed the contract in order to set up the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). SAARC was established to promote co-operation, trust and understanding in South Asia.
On this occasion, President Ibu Solih sent a message to the Secretary General of SAARC Amjad Hussain B. Sial. He extended facilitations on behalf of the Maldives Government and citizens and stated respective suggestions on SAARC and development. “We have to re-double our efforts to ensure that the decision-making process of SAARC is more efficient, our interventions more targeted, our delivery more result-oriented and provide tangible benefits to the people. To unlock the great potential in SAARC, we must encourage greater connectivity and technical cooperation among the people of SAARC.”
Before ending his message, President ensures the full commitment of the Government in uniting stronger regional cooperation among SAARC members and acknowledges founding members of SAARC, including former President His Excellency Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.
