In celebration of World Oceans Day, Reethi Beach Resort, in collaboration with Ocean Fanatics Maldives, hosted a successful coral planting event aimed at educating guests about the importance of coral reefs and engaging them in conservation efforts. The event provided guests of all ages a hands-on experience, allowing them to bind coral fragments onto specially designed metal structures. These structures were then placed in the house reef adjacent to the beautiful Fonimagoodhoo island.
Muneeb Mohamed, Manager of Ocean Fanatics Dive Center, highlighted the significance of this initiative, stating that coral reefs are "essential for marine biodiversity and coastal protection." He emphasized, "Their survival is one of the keys to the fight against climate change. Every piece of coral we plant today is a potential thriving reef that can support marine life down through the years."
This year's World Oceans Day theme, "Catalyzing Action for Our Ocean & Climate," underscores the urgency of protecting our oceans from climate change. Coral reefs play a vital role in this context, serving as biodiversity hotspots and natural defenses against coastal erosion and extreme currents. Through this coral planting activity, participants directly contributed to the rehabilitation and resilience of these fragile ecosystems.
Waruna, Marketing and PR Manager at Reethi Beach Resort, expressed pride in partnering with Ocean Fanatics Maldives for this meaningful event. "Our guests not only engaged in an educational activity but also made a real difference to the health of our local reef. This initiative fits perfectly into our ethos of responsible tourism and custodianship of the environment. It's encouraging to see our guests take such a hands-on approach to ensuring our wonderfully diverse underwater paradise is preserved for future generations," Waruna stated.
The event attracted a diverse group of participants, including families, diving enthusiasts, and conservationists, reflecting the universal appeal and importance of ocean conservation. The involvement of these varied groups highlights the broad support for initiatives aimed at protecting and conserving the pristine beauty of the Maldives.
