Saving the Corals at Fulhadhoo Island

Maldives Coral Institute, Save the Beach non-profit initiative and Fehurihidive PADI Dive Centre joins together to save the coral in Baa Atoll Fulhadhoo, one of the most beautiful islands of the atoll.

The island lies significantly far away from a great part of other inhabited islands and far away from busy sea and tourist routes, meaning that the ocean surrounding the island abounds in coral reefs and marine life such as dolphins and turtles. However, as years passed by, the beauty of this island started to fade.

During the project, the children and atoll community are were taught first-hand how to protect the health of their reefs during construction projects, as well as some hard coral science and biology. People from across Goidhoo Atoll joined in to help preserve the health of the beautiful and diverse resource of resilient corals.

A silt screen was prepared to save the corals. It is a barrier made from woven, synthetic materials that allow water to seep through, but do not allow larger silt particles to pass. It contains the fine particles of silt discharged into the water from dredging, construction or reclamation activities.
