Secret Paradise, a local tour company in the Maldives has teamed up with the community of K Guraidhoo to mark World Clean Up Day. Commemorated on the 17th of September every year, World Clean Up Day unites 191 countries worldwide, all striving for a cleaner planet. This civic movement initiated in 2018 brings together many volunteers who lend a hand to clean up litter and mismanaged waste from beaches, rivers, forests and etc.
This year’s World Clean Up Day was widely marked in the Maldives with numerous islands and tourist establishments also taking part in the event. In the island of Guraidhoo, overwhelming support was received from the local community for the clean-up with people from all ages and institutions taking part in the eco-friendly initiative. This included school children, Guraidhoo Island Council, Dive Point Guraidhoo, Manta Divers, Olive Ridley Project and many more. Joining in this green endeavor was Secret Paradise and its guests to help create a litter-free Guraidhoo.
Volunteers for the clean-up joined forces to clean the shoreline and eastern beach area of Guraidhoo. Afterwards, general waste and plastic waste were segregated and the Secret Paradise team returned back to the capital with 10 bags of plastic which was handed over to Parley Maldives for recycling.
Speaking on the day, Secret Paradise Co-Founder, Ruth Franklin said “While clean-up events support the protection of the environment and assist in reducing ocean plastic pollution, it is also vitally important to remind friends and families on how to dispose of rubbish safely in order to keep both our communities and the natural world clean and safe.’
Secret Paradise have always put environmental and social responsibility in the heart of their values and this is seen immensely in their guided tours. Engaging guests in a learning experience, Secret Paradise informs visitors about corals, marine life, seagrass, mangroves and conservation efforts via presentations, talks and first-hand experiences. A testimony to this is the 30 beach clean drives the tour company has conducted within the last three months alone.
Founded in 2012, Secret Paradise is an award-winning and sustainable tour company offering a plethora of carefully curated tours for its guests. The guided tours transcend the typical Maldives holiday by allowing guests to form close links with the Maldivian culture, local community and the environment.
