In a bid to nurture ocean stewardship and empower young leaders, Soneva Namoona, in partnership with the Maldives Swimming and Life Saving Skills Training School, organized a transformative ten-day camp in Baa Kihaadhoo. The "Leaders of the Ocean Camp" focused on training swimming instructors while instilling a deep sense of responsibility for the ocean.
This inspiring camp gathered 18 participants from 11 islands spanning Noonu (Holhudhoo, Magoodhoo, Maafaru, Kudafari), Baa (Kendhoo, Kamadhoo, Kudarikilu, Kihaadhoo, Dharavandhoo, and Maalhos), and Haa Dhaalu (Makunudhoo). Its goal was to equip them with a National Level 2 Swimming and Water Aerobics Instructor License.
The curriculum of the Leaders of the Ocean Camp was designed to provide a holistic experience, blending hands-on learning with a strong emphasis on leadership development. Participants engaged in a diverse range of activities, including leadership workshops, zero-waste education, survival skills training, fire awareness, water aerobics, and program development.
One unique aspect of the camp was that participants had the opportunity to take the required exams for the Swimming and Water Aerobics license right at the camp. Upon returning to their home islands, they are expected to complete 45 experience hours to earn their certifications.
This initiative is the latest in a series of programs led by Soneva Namoona on local islands. Its primary aim is to enhance technical capacity and instill a sense of ocean stewardship in young individuals. Over the past two years, this program has successfully empowered 700 young people, all thanks to the training provided by 22 Swimming and Water Rescue Instructors.
Ali Najih, a 23-year-old participant from B.Kihaadhoo, shared his journey, saying, "Being a part of the Leaders of the Ocean Camp has been an incredible journey. It's not just about learning ocean skills; it's also about forming connections and gaining a deeper understanding of our environment. This experience has ignited a sense of responsibility and leadership within me, and I'm excited to take back what I've learned to my island and nurture responsible ocean-going in my community."
Azhoora Ahmed, Soneva Namoona INSPIRE Manager, expressed immense pride in the personal growth witnessed in the camp's participants. She believes that the knowledge and values imparted during this camp will play a crucial role in creating a greener and more sustainable future for the Maldivian island communities.
The Leaders of the Ocean Camp stands as a shining example of how dedicated efforts can shape responsible leaders and safeguard the future of our oceans.
