Natural excellence at its roots, the resort chain advocates strongly for the overall positive impact of tourism and believes that environment and tourism go hand in hand. In this regard, Soneva has played a vital role in sustainability and conservation in 2021.

Take a look at what Soneva has been up to last year in the Sustainability front.

 Coral Restoration

Soneva Fushi partnered with Soneva Foundation, Coralive and Ark2030 to establish the largest coral nurseries in the world using Mineral Accretion Technology. This technology has paved for increased growth of 300%, allowing 50,0000 coral fragments to be propagated yearly.

Maker’s Place

Maker’s Place is a carbon-neutral island studio that transforms trash to treasure! With the capacity to recycle large amount of plastic and aluminum, the studio transforms them into practical objects and building materials. Soneva also facilitates recycling of local island wastes, mitigating threats to the Maldivian ecosystem.

Eradicating Mosquitos

In an effort to go chemical free, Soneva has switched pesticides with chemical free mosquito traps that pose no threat to the wildlife. By using a mixture of carbondioxide and lactic acid, the resort has found a way to eradicate mosquitoes in an eco-friendly manner. As a result, the mosquito population has fallen significantly by 98%.

Action Against Hunger

Soneva has invested in a three-year project with Action Against Hunger UK to end childhood malnutrition in Bangladesh. Through this project, families will receive skills and businesses training to enhance food production at households by utilizing climate resilient farming methods. Consequently, families can afford to buy food with their income or obtain organic produce from their own gardens.

Hornbill Reintroduction

The hornbills play an instrumental role in dispersing seeds of large trees across the forest floor bed, improving biodiversity. The first reintroduction took place in December 2021.
