Steps Being Taken to Assure Maldives Protects the ‘Safe Haven’ Status

Saturday 22nd of May 2021

The ongoing surges of Covid19 in various parts of the world, especially in South Asia recently, have made the Maldives reconsider the ease of travel measures to the country. In light of the rapidly changing situation, the Government of the Maldives have temporarily banned the entry of tourists from South Asia Region to the destination, effective from May 13, 2021.

The with-holding of visa issuance is applied to residents of the South Asian Countries only, as of now. They are Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. Also, travelers who have a history of visiting these countries within the last 14-days prior to arrival to the Maldives, are not allowed to transit for longer than 24 hours.

The measures in place are dreadful steps in the efforts of ensuring the health, safety, and wellbeing of the local population and travelers alike. Further strategic steps are being taken simultaneously, to maintain the ‘Safe Haven’ status of the destination for when it is right to once again open our doors without restrictions.

The tourism industry of the Maldives is working towards the ultimate target of making the Maldives the premier destination in the world with the first fully vaccinated tourism workforce. In this regard, on April 28, 2021, ‘I’m Vaccination’ campaign rolled out, a joint effort by the Ministry of tourism and health authorities to facilitate the free covid vaccination to all the frontline workers in the industry. Resorts have also joined in the efforts by extending the duration of Free PCR testing for guests, and upgrading to the latest technology available for a smoother and faster experience.
