Sun Island Resort & Spa, Villa Hotels & Resorts' adventurous and eco-luxury resort, has been nominated for the World Travel Awards 2022 as the Maldives Leading Green Resort. Sun Island Resort's consistent efforts toward environmental sustainability and ocean conservation, which are at the core of the company's values and key practices, have earned the company this honor.

Sun Island Resort & Spa recently received the prestigious Green Key Award, as a result of a comprehensive sustainability policy and concrete plan that includes objectives and annual actions for continuous environmental management improvement. In addition, the resort has previously won World Travel Awards for the Maldives Leading Green Resort and the Indian Ocean's Leading Green Resort.

Since then, the resort has made significant progress in environmental protection and preservation of the island's natural ecology. Sun Island Resort & Spa has implemented eco-friendly techniques to reduce energy consumption, save water, and recycle with such a thriving abundance of nature, yet a fragile environment. In addition, the island and a nearby sandbank host regular island and lagoon clean-ups, with all recyclables donated to Parley for the Oceans.

Furthermore, this gorgeous getaway is known for its spectacular natural beauty, signature Indian Ocean experiences, and innovative sustainability efforts. It is located in South Ari Atoll, close to the South Ari Marine Protected Area (SAMPA). With extensive botanical gardens that produce more than 20,000 coconuts per month, as well as a wide variety of tropical fruits, vegetables, and herbs that are picked and served in the resort's restaurants, the resort is set in a lush tropical environment. Aside from the fertile environment, the island is home to a variety of migratory birds that seek refuge in the dense tropical vegetation.

Sun Island Resort & Spa invites guests to participate in and support the resort's sustainability, recycling, and energy-saving initiatives. In addition, the diveOceanus dive center organizes island, lagoon, and sandbank clean-ups on a regular basis to help preserve the pristine environment. Guests will feel a stronger connection to the rich Maldivian nature as a result of the opportunity to contribute, and environmentally conscious travelers will be encouraged to be a part of a greener future!
