Sun Siyam Olhuveli Maldives Launches Eco-Friendly Initiative to Recycle Bed Linens into Hand Cloths

Monday 29th of July 2024

Sun Siyam Olhuveli Maldives has unveiled an innovative eco-friendly initiative that underscores its commitment to sustainability. The resort has introduced a program to repurpose old bed linens into hand cloths for its public restrooms, reflecting its dedication to reducing waste and promoting environmental responsibility.

Part of the resort’s broader “Recycle-Reuse” initiative, this new program aims to minimize waste and cut costs associated with paper tissues. By converting discarded bed linens into hand cloths, Sun Siyam Olhuveli is taking a significant step toward sustainability.

The process begins with the collection of damaged bed linens, which are then taken to the resort’s in-house tailor. Each king-sized sheet is meticulously cut into 60 pieces measuring 10×10 inches. The tailor ensures that the edges are folded and stitched to prevent fraying, making each piece durable and ready for use. The linens are washed thoroughly to meet hygiene standards before being placed in the restrooms.

This recycling approach not only extends the life of the linens but also aligns with the resort’s environmental goals. The use of high-absorbency bed linens as hand cloths reduces textile waste significantly. Instead of ending up in landfills, these linens are transformed into practical items for the resort’s operations.

Hassan Adil, General Manager at Sun Siyam Olhuveli Maldives, highlighted the importance of this initiative. “By reusing towels, we are not only reducing the number of laundry loads but also cutting down on water consumption,” Adil said. “This initiative is a key part of our Sun Siyam Cares program, which focuses on reducing energy and water use, managing waste, and supporting community development while investing in renewable energy.”

The resort’s commitment to sustainability is evident in its various efforts, including reducing plastic use, conserving local heritage, and investing in renewable energy. Through initiatives like the recycled linen program, Sun Siyam Olhuveli continues to set a standard in responsible tourism, ensuring that its natural beauty is preserved for future generations.

Guests are invited to celebrate this milestone and support the resort’s ongoing efforts in responsible tourism. By joining Sun Siyam Olhuveli in its commitment to sustainability, visitors contribute to a greater cause while enjoying an unforgettable stay in paradise.
