The Maldives is set to expand its tourism beyond the well-known resorts, according to Minister of Tourism Ibrahim Faisal. During a recent signing ceremony for a new 5-star training resort, Faisal emphasized the government’s commitment to developing sustainable tourism in all regions, including those currently underexplored.
Faisal pointed out that while no government has previously focused on promoting tourism in Addu City in a sustainable way, there is significant potential for tourism in the islands. The government’s policy aims to create local tourism opportunities by building accommodations, or “beds,” in areas where tourism is not yet established. These developments will be supported by training through the new resort, providing essential skills to locals and strengthening the overall industry.
Additionally, the Minister highlighted the ongoing expansion of Velana International Airport (VIA), which is expected to play a pivotal role in boosting tourism. The airport's multibillion-dollar upgrade will increase its capacity to handle 25 million passengers annually. The domestic terminal, which currently accommodates 300 passengers per hour, will be expanded to handle up to 2,000 passengers per hour, enabling smoother access for travelers across the country.
These projects reflect the government's long-term vision for a more inclusive and sustainable tourism model, benefiting both established and emerging destinations in the Maldives.
