Swimming Club for Children with Autism in Maldives

On 25th January, New Lagoon Swimming Club in Maldives initiated a project to teach children with autism how to swim. The inauguration ceremony of the project was held at Maafannu Rasfannu.

The chief guest to start the ceremony was the State Minister for Transport Ministry Mr. Ahmed Adil along with the Minister for fisheries and Agriculture Ms. Zaha Waheed and Ms. Aisha Shujoon from the Supreme Court.

While a similar project was carried out in the past in which 30 successful participants learned how to swim, this time there will be 10 participants. For each student, a coach will be there and once the student learns, the student will be replaced with a new student, states the head coach of the club Ismail Faruhan.

Children with autism require special assistance due to features such as impaired communication skills, difficulty making eye contact, and repetitive behaviors and activities. However, they are excellent in learning things implicitly and it is important that everyone knows how to swim, especially in an island nation like Maldives.
