The past week has been filled with good news for the team at Amilla Maldives, following the many international accolades recognizing the sustainability efforts of the resort. Since the team set on an ambitious journey to make the island an ecofriendly haven two years ago, Sustainability Day 2021 on October 27th arrived with new hope and appreciation.
Just recently recognized by EarthCheck with Silver Certification, Sustainability Day began with the root of our future – junior guests at the resort. These future eco-advocates were led by resident Marine Biologist to an eventful day of beach cleanups and an exciting family upcycling challenge. Participants collected waste washed ashore and separated them to recycle in the challenge.
Homemade@Amilla program was implemented in the Tepache and Mango Soda Class also organized for the occasion. Guests were given an insight in to the resort’s initiative to grow and use as many items on the resort itself, including a tour of the Mystique Garden – the thoughtful and exclusive garden on the island that has become home to most of its produce.
The Resort’s Sustainability and Wellness Mentor, Victoria Kruse explains the concept “With a growing world population and attrition of fertile, not to mention organic, growing and grazing area, we need to find ways to utilise all parts of food and find creative and tasty ways of using items that would otherwise be thrown out.”
Homemade@Amilla aims to reduce packaging waste on the island and eliminate food preservatives, both leading to a healthier ingredient option at the resort with the gardens.
Curated from ingredients on the island, a Zero Waste Menu was offered to guests in a special dinner to conclude the activities. Delicious dishes were plated with ingredients harvested in the garden and tastefully combined together by the resort’s talented chefs.
The menu is part of the thriving Wellness Your Way Program at Amilla. Nearing the Sustainability Day, Amilla also received news of the program being recognized by Destination Deluxe Awards as the Wellness Cuisine of the Year. The inclusive program allows guests with different eating lifestyles to not compromise on their food while on vacay at Amilla. A wide range of culonary offerings from keto/paleo/low carb, gluten free, dairy free and vegan/vegetarian are catered for within the program.
