The Bright Side of 2020, Under the Water at Four Seasons Maldives

Saturday 9th of January 2021

Last year was tragical and we could say that all of us were glad to hit Shift Delete on it. Many parts of the world closed its doors, travelling came to a halt and we missed a lot of experiences while staying indoors. But while we were dreaming of travelling again, there was this one team that was unstoppable when it came to protecting the underwater world. Regardless of 2020 being a very dark year, Marine Savers and Manta Trust brought out the bright side of the year, under the water.

Four Season Maldives’ resident team of marine biologists and researchers carried on looking after the turtle patients and hatchlings admitted to the resorts’ turtle rescue centres. They kept investing time to protect the ocean's most diverse and complex ecosystems - the coral reefs - which are crucial to the welfare of the marine habitat around the resorts’ lagoon. And all the efforts were worth it, as they wrapped up the year with several accomplishments.

While 93 injured turtles were rescued in the rehab centres (adults and hatchlings), 37 rehabilitated turtles were safely released and sent back to the wild. 245 new coral frames were planted around the Resorts’ lagoons, the equivalent to 13,096 fragments of coral. 280 new Spinner Dolphins, over 80 Bottlenose dolphins and 3 pilot whales were identified. Further, 4 new turtle nests were discovered across the Resorts including one on the Island Spa isle in Kuda Huraa. These are just some of the many achievements by Marine Savers and Manta Trust.
