It’s not Madagascar. It’s neither Seychelles nor Reunion Island. This year, the Maldives grabs the title for Indian Ocean's Leading Cruise Destination! This is the 4th award the island nation has received at the World Travel Awards 2020.
This shouldn’t be surprising, and here’s why. It starts with the unique geography of the destination. The Maldives is comprised of 1192 islands that stretch along a length of 871 kilometres. While the country covers an area of approximately 90,000 square kilometres, only 298 square kilometres of that is dry land and the rest is water. The scattered islands itself are a natural attraction for visitors.
But just wait until you dive deeper into this wonderful place. Literally dive deeper. Maldives is an ideal destination for diving among caves, tunnels and shipwrecks. Some of the most spectacular shipwrecks lie on the ocean floor of this tropical diving paradise. In North Male, the Victory wreck is a cargo ship that lies on the southwestern side of Hulhulé. Sail towards the Lhaviyani and you’ll find one of the biggest dive attractions in the Atoll, the Shipyard, which is 40 years old.
Spot whale sharks and Manta Rays, magical experience in South Ari Atoll. The jewel of Baa Atoll, Hanifaru Bay is where the world’s largest groupings of manta rays can be seen. And in Addu Atoll, you’ll find exceptional scuba diving spot where you can spot almost everything from manta rays to eagle rays to turtles and more.
Admire the islands from your cruise. At a distance, you’ll notice the greenery, long palm trees, white sandy beaches and the local life. A cruise vacay in Maldives is a must-have experience.
