The second phase of the new apron development at Velana International Airport (VIA) has been completed. Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) reports that the apron will stretch 25,500 square meters in space and will allow for 04 wide-body aircraft to park with ease.
In July 2019, the apron, which was developed by the China Beijing Urban Development Construction Group (BUCG), was officially inaugurated. It was stretched to 70,000 square meters in space. After the completion of the first phase, MACL’s corporate communication general manager Hassan Afeef said the project work of the second phase had already started.
The aircraft in the apron can be parked in two varying options; option one allows two wide body aircraft and seven narrow body aircraft to park while option two allows five wide-bodies and one narrow body to park.
Work on a fuel system is underway to ease aircraft refueling; to be made available at the apron parking slots instead of oil tankers or lorries carrying the fuel across the airport apron. Other developments under the USD800 million project includes a new passenger terminal, cargo terminal and a new seaplane terminal.
